A good essay is one that is effective and gets your idea across loud and clear. When you are writing, you need to make sure that people understand what you are trying to say, be it on an academic platform or a job application.
One of the best ways to write on something specific is to ask a question and then answer it in your essay. A heading starting with an interesting question makes the reader inquisitive so they would want to read further to find out the answer.
This will help you get very specific around your topic of the essay. When you figure out what you think the answer to that question is, that will be your thesis. Your thesis cannot be shaky. It needs to be definitive and give an answer that is either a yes or a no, it shouldn’t be a maybe. For example, if your question is: “Tea or coffee – which is the most popular beverage?” You need to pick one.
Begin with an attention grabber that can either be some startling information, an anecdote, or a dialogue. If you are adding some amazing news, it has to be verifiable and even if it’s not something new, it should be written in a way that it illustrates the point you want to make to your reader and grasps their attention. You can even elaborate on it if you want. The anecdote needs to be short and to the point but carefully chosen, as it can either make or break your essay.
This is where you present your main points so follow this simple formula: an introduction of the evidence, followed by evidence, and the analysis. The introduction explains the gist of your essay briefly. The evidence gives examples and situations that will support your claim or the subject of your essay. Lastly, the analysis gives relevance to your paper so that the reader feels more connected to the essay.
All’s well that ends well. A conclusion doesn’t need to follow a certain pattern. It brings closure to the reader and sums up your points or simply reviews them. It needs to be concise and leave the reader with a nice feeling. End it with a punch!
