A general essay would include an introduction followed by 3 paragraphs of the main body and a conclusion, so a total of 5 paragraphs that will be sufficient to explain the topic in question. However, complex topics require you to be more detailed and structure your essay in a way that enables you to convince the reader with the point you are trying to make.

The purpose of an introduction in essay writing is to present your stance on the issue at hand but an effective introduction is much more than that. Before you even begin with defining your thesis statement, you must include relevant questions or surprising statistics to captivate the reader’s interest. Once you have their attention, you may proceed to present your position on the issue you are writing about. It will help the reader to clearly identify the position you are taking on the subject.

The next few paragraphs will form the main body of your essay. You will support your argument by providing relevant examples about the thesis statement. For the first paragraph, you should be able to present a valid argument. Use examples that are relevant and add to your argument. The first sentence of this paragraph should be the topic sentence that directly relates to the topic you highlighted in the introductory paragraph.

Essay writing is a skill that requires you to not only illustrate your standpoint with examples but also elaborate on them in terms of relevance. Why are they relevant in the context of an essay? This question must be answered directly after you have stated the example. Finally, you must link it to your topic in a way that justifies your perspective.
